A message from The Imam

Dear Brother/Sister

Asalamu alaikum wa rahmatullah. I pray that you and your community in the best of health and Iman.
I am writing to you to ask you to support us in a very special mission in our small town of High Wycombe. High Wycombe is based in the heart of Buckinghamshire, and you will surely have heard of this county countless times as it is home to some of the best schools in the country.

However, despite having this tremendous local advantage, the Muslims in High Wycombe are at the bottom of the social ladder in terms of housing, education and achievements. This, I know is not unusual but I write to you in the hope that you will feel as I do, that there is something that can be done about this and I want to tell you about our efforts.

There is a part of High Wycombe called Castlefield, and it has in the past year been selected for what has been called "The Castlefield Challenge Partnership". The aim of this project, initiated by the local district council, is to unite with a number of organizations working within Castlefield and to improve it and to make it a better place to live. It has been identified as one of the most "deprived" areas of this town, the target population is 5125 residents of the Castlefield housing estate, 37% of these are from ethnic minority backgrounds and 15% are aged between 16 and 24. Unemployment is high within these two main groups with 17.5% of economically active 16-24 year olds and 28% of ethnic minority groups unemployed. The Muslims make up a very substantial majority of this ethnic minority. Jamia Rehmania became involved due to the very large number of Muslims so affected, by virtue of the fact that they reside in this area and make up a substantial number of the statistics quoted.

I must stress that the centre is intended, via its classes, to assist the students and to help them in any area that they feel this assistance is needed. Our aim is to be very instrumental in making this young generation of the Muslim Ummah realise its potential, to aspire to higher education, and to identify their identity - that of being a Muslim. We feel if our aim is achieved that we will help to reduce the number of unemployed young Muslims in this area, to improve their outlook in life and to inshallah change the direction of where the young Muslims in this area are currently heading.

We realise the importance of having fully qualified and experienced teachers to teach the relevant classes and to run the centre as professionally as possible so that persons dedicating their time to this cause are reasonably paid. We know from experience that there are no short cuts and we do not seek any, because to produce the best in the students one needs to provide the best teachers.

It is therefore, with great hope and expectation that I urge you to give generously to support our cause and with your help and prayers, I am sure that we can take this positive step in providing these classes and achieve our objectives and in so doing set an exemplary example for others to follow.

I thank you for your time and patience in reading this. Wasalam

K B Rehman
